Dr. Janet Richmond is Named New Head of Biology Department
The Department of Biological Sciences announces the appointment of Professor Janet Richmond as its new head effective August 16, 2014.
Dr. Richmond joined UIC in 2002 as part of the Neurobiology research group. Her research program delves into the molecular mechanisms that control chemical signaling from neurons, a process known as synaptic transmission. Her pioneering work developing synaptic electrophysiology in C. elegans and her research characterizing over 40 proteins implicated in synaptic signaling, learning and memory have received international attention, with articles published in prestigious journals and continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health.
She has served as WISEST Facilitator, the Director of the Lab of Integrative Neuroscience (LIN) and is currently a member of the All Campus P&T committee.
In 2010, Dr. Richmond was awarded a prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Award recognizing her scientific contributions to the international community. In 2013, she received the University Scholar Award. This award is given by the University of Illinois to faculty members who have demonstrated superior performance in scholarly activities in both research and teaching, and who show great promise for future achievements.
