Rachel Poretsky, who is lead PI on a Discovery Partners Institute’s (DPI) 2020 research seed grant: Wastewater-based epidemiology to track SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater. This team is developing surveillance methods in the Chicago area and work with public health departments to develop a system for early warnings of outbreaks.

In an attempt to provide doctors and nurses with more time to prepare for outbreaks, a growing number of communities in the U.S. and other countries are collecting sewage samples and posting charts showing changes over time in the genetic signature of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
