The Graduate College recognized PhD student Zahra Batool with a 2020 Award for Graduate Research for her exceptional research into sarecycline, a ribosome-targeting antibiotic of the tetracycline-class that was recently FDA-approved for the clinical treatment of acne vulgaris.

Batool and her collaborators demonstrated that sarecycline binds to the ribosome in a similar way to that of other tetracyclines but, unlike other tetracyclines, exhibits a different mode of action.  Batool’s research utilized ribosome-profiling analysis and drug kinetic studies to understand the unique mode of action of this drug.
