Abstract: The ventral pallidum is an opioid-sensitive structure in the basal ganglia. Classically considered a homogenous inhibitory 'relay' nucleus, we now understand the VP is a highly heterogeneous brain area, with discrete subcircuits subserving hedonic valuation and modulating reward seeking in the face of negative consequences. We overview this heterogeneity at the functional and transcriptional levels, and discuss how opioid-driven adaptations in these pathways may underlie behavioral adaptations in opioid use disorder.
