Abstract: Adaptation and speciation tend to take place on timescales we typically don't have access to, so studying those processes is hard. Researchers have used evolutionary experiments to understand short-term processes on the order of generations. Researchers have also used phylogenies to infer long-term processes on the order of millions of years. However, how one goes from generational level change to diverse phylogenies in the intermediate time scale is unclear. To help fill this gap, my lab is studying a high-resolution, 20,000 year-long fossil sequence of threespine stickleback fish. The sequence captures substantial morphological evolution, and comparison to modern data stickleback allows inference about the meaning of this change. In this talk, I will compare fossil stickleback to extant stickleback to try to infer the genetics of armor evolution, quantify rate at which reproductive isolation accrues, and test one of the key models of the Evolutionary Modern Synthesis.
