Abstract: To date, hundreds of plant genomes have been sequenced, assembled, annotated, and made publicly available. While these genomes can be used in a variety of ways to identify candidate genes for important functional roles most predicted genes remain uncharacterized. In this talk, I will discuss some of the genome sequencing projects I have been involved in and how we have made progress in gene functional validation by identifying genes involved in a variety of processes including pathogen response and the biosynthesis of secondary compounds. Future work includes expanding these approaches to new plant systems particularly native plants with nutritional or medicinal value.
