Host: Joe Walker
Abstract: Modern sequencing projects produce giga base pairs of data to answer specific questions about population structure or a species’ biology. These data can be utilized to investigate various questions beyond the focus of the initial study. Repurposing these datasets to answer new questions is a critical tool to optimize resources, particularly for studying endangered or threatened species where samples and tissues cannot be easily obtained, or for studies by research groups at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions where resources for new data collection may be limited. In this talk, I present examples where colleagues and I have used RNA-sequencing datasets originally generated to address physiological features of non-model organisms (particularly desert rodents and sharks) to address questions of population history and status. This approach allowed us to generate markers for future population genetic analyses and annotate genomes for the evaluation of historical population sizes in three kangaroo rat species. Additionally, I present insights about olfaction and historical demography in several sharks based on an analysis of genomic data that were initially generated to study immune system function and genome evolution.
