Abstract: Urban forests provide many benefits to surrounding communities, including urban cooling and carbon sequestration, as well as reduction in stormwater runoff and air pollution. Urban forests will be a key, nature-based solution to combat climate change in cities, and our ability to plan for and manage these socio-ecological systems depends on our understanding of what drives the structure, function, and distribution of trees in urban landscapes. In this talk, I will discuss the approaches that my collaborators and I have used to study these complex systems, including use of large datasets representing millions of tree records and novel applications of remote sensing. Our work has helped us better understand the diversity and structure of urban forests in California, urban forest resilience and vulnerability to climate change, and impact on bird diversity. Together, these studies can help us plan and manage healthier and more equitably distributed urban forests, especially in the context of climate change
