Moonlighting proteins comprise a specific type of multifunctional proteins with more than one biophysical or biochemical function performed by one polypeptide chain. These proteins are involved in foundational roles, for example, translation regulation, signal transduction, and host-pathogen interactions. Increasing our understanding of the structures, functions, mechanisms, and regulation of this class of multifunctional proteins has implications in many current research areas in biology, for example, protein evolution and improving protein function prediction. Importantly, my lab's use of multiple approaches to study moonlighting proteins has led to opportunities for many undergraduate students to participate in research projects, including during the pandemic when other opportunities were lost.
