The snow leopard is listed as Endangered under IUCN Red List criterion one, C1, that is -- small population size, declining at a specified rate.  The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is widely recognized as the most comprehensive, objective global approach for evaluating species’ conservation status.  As with the world’s other threatened cats, the extinction-risk of rare snow leopards is presently being reassessed.  The current global snow leopard number ranges between 3920 and 6390.  Not all, however, agree on these guestimates, inviting the possible proposal of changing the present endangered status endowed to snow leopard.

Dr. Ale will talk about the science at stake in the assessment of global snow leopard population size.  He will highlight the challenges associated with snow leopard conservation.
