Title: Nitric Oxide in the Retina
Abstract: Nitric oxide (NO) is a potent neuromodulator and vasodilator throughout the central nervous system. I will review some of what we know and the many open questions about the effects of NO in the retina. Then I will discuss work in my lab that identified the source of NO in the inner retina of the mouse, the nNOS-2 amacrine cells, and their curious electrical coupling and auto-regulation system. Finally, I will introduce some of our future directions on the role of NO in neurovascular coupling in retinas of both mice and humans.
