Abstract: The Chicago River System is a major pathway for the spread of invasive aquatic species between Great Lakes and Mississippi River watersheds. Current efforts to prevent spread are focused on electric barriers which have been developed to deter silver and bighead carps (aka “Asian Carp”). Many other species – especially invertebrates – pose a risk of spread but are not being addressed. In this presentation I will discuss ongoing work in my lab looking at the effectiveness of a range of interventions at preventing the spread of invasive invertebrates. These include electric barriers and water quality. I will then talk about our efforts reducing the population size of invasive red swamp crayfish in the Chicago River System. This section will deal with the discovery of this species, six years of trapping data, and our success at developing better trapping protocols.
