E&E Seminar: Restoring soil habitats to rebuild biodiversity and ecosystem services by Dr. Elizabeth Bach, The Nature Conservancy

January 29, 2019

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Location

SEL 4289, 840 West Taylor St, Chicago, IL 60607

Address

Chicago, IL 60612

Abstract:

People and the planet face several environmental challenges now and in the near future. Soil biodiversity is foundational to ecosystem services and functions that can address these challenges, like carbon and nitrogen cycling, water filtering and storage, wildlife habitat, and climate change mitigation. Yet, soil biodiversity is rarely considered explicitly in land management approaches to improve ecosystem functioning.  In her talk, Elizabeth will share how soil micro-habitats and microbial communities contribute to ecosystem restoration in the tallgrass prairie region, and how soil biodiversity can be a focus to advance an integrated global sustainability agenda.
