Abstract: Microbial communities play an outsized role in driving both local and global biogeochemical cycling. Wetlands act as hotspots in the landscape for both carbon storage and transformations, and microbial composition and metabolic functions are.

Wetland ecosystems have an outsized impact on the global carbon cycle, both storing substantial carbon in their soils (often referred to as "blue carbon") and producing roughly 1/3 of all global methane emissions. Even slight changes in flooding frequency and intensity in these systems can have profound changes in oxidation-reduction potential and microbial metabolism, influencing both the potential of these systems to store carbon and produce methane. In this talk, I will discuss how two studies that address how environmental factors such as flooding and the combination of flooding and salinity influence the composition, structure, and metabolic potential of microbial communities in terrestrial and coastal wetlands. I will use these studies to demonstrate how microbial analyses can be performed within the DOE's Systems Biology Knowledgebase, a platform developed for and with contributions from, the broader research community. I will conclude with discussion of ongoing research and development within the KBase platform to support cross-study data analysis and the integration of microbial functions into larger scale models.
