Host: Angie Salles
Abstract: Cities are rarely thought of as ecosystems, but can be places where biodiversity thrives, especially if thoughtfully designed. Key to that goal is understanding where and how wildlife live in cities, what types of habitat supports them, and connecting city-dwellers to the nature that is all around them. Liza Lehrer will present key results from a 16 year-long study of urban wildlife run by herself and colleagues at the Urban Wildlife Institute at Lincoln Park Zoo. This research, now replicated in 60+ cities around the world, uses trail cameras to study terrestrial mammals, acoustic monitors to study birds and bats, and engages the public in hands-on research through a community science program to monitor bats in city parks. Lehrer also will discuss the ways in which the Urban Wildlife Institute is using this research to inform wildlife-friendly urban planning and design in Chicago.
